Trainee story
Ashley Jacinto Sales is a first-generation college student from Guatemala, combining her passions for culinary arts and computer science as she plans to attend Laney College. Growing up with limited resources, Ashley found joy and creativity in the kitchen, experimenting with recipes and cooking alongside her family. This early experience ignited a lifelong love for exploring different cuisines and flavors. Ashley joined Sprouts Chef Training to hone her skills and gain professional kitchen experience. While she initially felt nervous, her time at Snail Bar under the mentorship of Chef Andres proved transformative. Ashley learned essential skills like organizing tasks, maintaining focus in a fast-paced environment, and multitasking to handle a rotating menu.
One of her favorite accomplishments was mastering how to prepare oysters, pancakes, and omelets—the pancakes being her personal favorite. She even tried caviar for the first time, though she admits it wasn’t her favorite. The program has not only expanded Ashley's culinary abilities but also helped her grow personally. She credits the experience with pushing her out of her comfort zone and helping her build confidence in social settings. Once shy and reserved, Ashley now feels at ease engaging with others in the kitchen, forming meaningful connections with her mentors and peers. She found events like "Homie Night," where she met various chefs from the area, particularly inspiring. Her relationship with Chef Andres was both honest and supportive, allowing her to grow as a person while learning invaluable culinary skills. Ashley’s ability to juggle multiple tasks in the kitchen has become a point of pride, though she’s eager to continue improving her knife skills after an early mishap taught her the importance of precision and focus.
Although Ashley originally planned to pursue computer science, her time at Sprouts has deepened her interest in a culinary career. She finds cooking to be a creative and fulfilling outlet that balances her logical side. This dual interest has inspired her to take culinary classes at Laney College while continuing to explore her love of technology.Outside of the kitchen, Ashley enjoys making pastries, watching baking videos, and cooking for her siblings, often acting as the family chef. She credits her growth to the support of her therapist, significant other, and the Sprouts program, which have helped her overcome personal challenges, gain confidence, and dream big. With her sights set on a future that blends creativity and discipline, Ashley is excited to continue her culinary journey while exploring new opportunities.
