Trainee story
Kayley has enjoyed cooking since she was young and was introduced to food by having the opportunity to help her parents prepare meals. In school, she followed her interests and enrolled in a Career Technical Education Culinary Arts program at her high school. Through her high school program, she learned cooking skills basics which included sanitizing workstations, knife skills, basic food prep, and catering. To gain even more hands-on experience in the kitchen, Kayley became a Sprouts Chef Trainee with Stanford University Dining's halls under the mentorship of Chef Junelle Fronda.Throughout her internship, Kayley was able to learn how to prepare large quantities of food, including assembling pizzas and California rolls, dicing squash, chopping parsley, cutting up quesadillas, and more! She became so well-versed in her food preparation that her chef mentor complimented her speed and efficiency in executing her knife skills. Kayley was also exposed to unique work opportunities and had the opportunity to cater a Dia de los Muertos event at the university and also earned the chance to work in different dining halls throughout Stanford's campus. During her tours, she was able to sample some of the dining hall food, of which she particularly enjoyed the broccoli cheddar soup. While Kayley is still deciding on her career path, she plans to attend a 4-year university where she will continue working in a dining hall as an on-campus job. Kayley is grateful for her experience working in the Stanford dining hall as a way to explore culinary careers and simultaneously find a fun way to help pay for her college education. When Kayley is not preparing her favorite dish of Bruschetta, she can be found playing any number of instruments including the piano, guitar, and ukulele (the latter two of which she taught herself to play!). Kayley additionally loves walking and exercising in nature. We are happy Kayley has enjoyed the Sprouts Chef Training internship as a step in her career and can't wait to see what she does next!
