Trainee story

Luis grew up in a household where the restaurant industry was the norm. Inspired by his mother who works as a server and his father who is a chef Luis also wanted to integrate himself into this lifestyle. Inspired by his parents and feeling like he has learned all that he could at conventional fast food kitchens Luis heard about Sprouts Chef Training through Enterprise for Youth. A program that helps youth prepare for the job industry. Through Enterprise for Youth Luis applied to Sprouts and was placed at Michelin star restaurant Mister Jiu’s under Executive Chef Brandon Jew.

Luis got the opportunity to go shopping with Chef Brandon where they would pick up fresh produce that would be used that night. He also learned how to clean duck hearts and make different sauces. He looks forward not only to the techniques that he is learning but also the friends he is making. He is always excited to see his friends Mary and Lauren in the kitchen. He is now taking what he has learned in the kitchen home such as how to properly store food in the fridge.

After his internship Luis plans on continuing his time in the restaurant industry just like his parents. He is excited to go into his junior year and spend time with his friends outside with his friends and family. He is incredibly grateful for the experience because it allowed him to try so many opportunities that he wouldn’t have gotten in a conventional kitchen.
