Trainee story
Sarai found her way into the Sprouts Chef Training program through Avenues for Justice, an organization that helps divert youth away from the punitive criminal justice system through community-based support programs and workforce training. Sarai spent her younger years in the kitchen with her mom where she taught her how to make different types of Caribbean and Jamaican dishes. Inspired by the cooking that she did with her mom and eager to expand her skills beyond the family kitchen Sarai applied to our program.
She was placed at Raf’s with Chef Mary Attea. Sarai’s entry into the program opened new doors, particularly in the pastry department. Over the last few weeks, Sarai has enjoyed learning to make different types of dough, fillings, and cookies, as well as perfecting techniques like stirring dough without causing it to fall flat. She’s also proud of how much her knife skills have improved, both in the kitchen at Sprouts and at home. As the program progressed, Sarai transitioned from working in the kitchen to taking on responsibilities in the bakery. Her passion for improving her skills is evident—she finds joy in mastering the precision of cutting, and she’s curious to explore the art of sauce-making next. The confidence she’s gained through this internship has made her more consistent and taught her valuable planning skills.Sprouts has become a pathway for her not only to improve her culinary talents but also to save for college, with the goal of becoming a nurse practitioner.
When Sarai isn’t busy in the kitchen, she enjoys creative outlets like painting, sewing, and reading. Her favorite book, *To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before*, reflects her thoughtful nature. With her hands always busy, whether cooking, crafting, or creating, Sarai embodies a blend of curiosity and determination that is leading her toward a future filled with possibilities.
