Trainee story
Fleeing life-threatening violence and gang activity, Melissa and her father made the difficult journey from Honduras to seek asylum in the United States in 2015. While she talks with her family in Honduras every day on the phone, Melissa struggles with the separation from her mother, aunts, and uncles. Here in the US, life is not easy. Melissa works over 40 hours a week at a meat shop to help her father pay for their lodging and food. In addition to her long work hours, she attends school as a full-time student. With a very low level of English, making friends and getting good grades is very difficult. But that doesn't keep Melissa from dreaming. Now a senior in high school, her goal is to work as a chef post-graduation. She hopes to enroll in Sprouts Chef Training program so that she can establish the critical cooking skills and industry knowledge needed to land a culinary job that will allow her to provide for herself and live comfortably. With high school graduation on the horizon, she needs something that will sustain her in the future.
